Learning a language can be challenging, but things like having a good teacher and textbook, along with a solid study approach, can make a huge difference and even make learning a language, both fun and enjoyable.

Here you will find a collection of German online language learning tips and resources. The entire self-study learning process broken down into 4 steps, working up from beginner to advanced.


STEP 1: GET A TEXTBOOK

Recommended Textbooks For beginners,  Deutsch Aktuell is one of the best book series available for learning German. Find out more the books themselves and where to purchase them. Supplemental audio and video are also online.

STEP 2: DEVELOP A STUDY PLAN

Language Study Tips Learn how develop a routine as part of the study plan and know what to expect while learning German in general.

Online Classes (MOOCs) Learn about MOOCs (“Massively Open Online Courses”). These are actual classes, some even from actual universities. Most lessons are self-paced and do not follow calendar dates.

STEP 3: PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

STEP 4: LANGUAGE CERTIFICATION

German Language Proficiency In Europe, the different levels of language proficiency are officially classified as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. For each exam one must be able to: listen, read, write, and speak German. These certifications are important for those wishing to live or study in Germany. Learn about how to prepare for the exams are provided.
